I’ve just finished reading Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel from 2000, When We Were Orphans. It has a narrator who is deeply unengaging, self-absorbed and ineffectual. This book tests to the limit the truism that a protagonist doesn’t have to be “likeable” 📚
